Looking for a new job or career can be a daunting task In our current economy. Where do you start, what can you do to make it less tedious and maximize your results? The following tips will help you find job openings without having to spend hours scouring individual company sites.

SimplyHired: Use the Advanced Job Search option for best results and then fill in a specific job title if you want to narrow your results – “Mechanical Engineer” rather then just Engineer. If you are looking within a specific range, enter the location specifics and your commutable range.

Set your Preferences to the largest number of results per page – this will eliminate the need to keep going back and forth to view more openings. At the box in the bottom, enter a name in the box for “save this search as”. This will save you from having to recreate the search each time. To further increase your productivity, sign up for “get email alerts” on your results page. This will email you new results, or you can sign up for an RSS feed.

Indeed: Running neck and neck with Simplyhired, the concept is the same and will overlap to a large extent however there are enough unique openings that it’s worth using both sites. The same tips for Simplyhired apply here too.

Just Posted: A simple little site that lets you enter your job-related keywords and a geographic location. You determine the relevance of the results by setting a percentage. Start at 70% and adjust from there.

Jobster: Like Simply Hired and Indeed. Same tips apply. Make sure to use the “get job alerts” to automate the process.

Nicheboards: This site lists various industry specific job boards as the name might imply. Some of the niches include finance, logistics, manufacturing, health and science and diversity boards.

I didn’t list mega Job site Monster because their openings will be shown in your search with the sites listed above. Happy Hunting!

One of the most common requests that I get besides how to find an old friend or loved one is how to find reliable medical information or forums regarding a specific medical condition.

Here is a list of the top 100 most reliable medical sites from the consumer and patient health information section of the medical library association (what a mouthful). I’ve used 80% of these sites at one time or another and they have been a great resource for many health topics.

Sometimes it’s helpful to connect with other people that share the same medical challenge. BoardTracker is a great resource for finding discussions on almost any topic you can imagine. Try typing fibromyalgia, migraine or cancer into this tool and you’ll be amazed by the results.

Please remember that no site will take the place of working with your physician for medical conditions. If you’re having a hard time finding something, please leave me a comment and I’ll write a step by step post to help you find the information you need.

A large part of effectively and efficiently integrating the Internet into your daily life is organization. At home or at work, most of us have some sort of organizational system, even it only makes sense to us.. Your approach to your online findings should also be organized, otherwise you’ll waste precious time rather than save it. If you don’t already have a system in place, do the following:

1. Organize your favorites or bookmarks. If you’re not sure how, here are a few helpful links: If you’re not sure what your version is, open Internet Explorer and click on “help” in the toolbar, and then “About Internet Explorer” A window should pop up with your version. This also works for Firefox.

Internet Explorer 6: IE6 Favorites Organization

Internet Explorer 7: IE7 Favorites Organization

Using Windows Vista:Vista Favorites Organization

Here’s an internet explorer 7 cheat sheet: Cheat Sheet

Mac: Mac Favorites Organization

2. Create Folders in your favorites. Make sure the name will make it easy for you to find things fast. Create a main folder for each major category in your life. For Example Work. Within work, you can create additional folders such as “Health Insurance” (I keep a link to my health insurance provider’s website, that way I can easily find benefit and physician info when I need it).

3. Revisit your links and folders from time to time. If you aren’t using it, delete it. The Next post will cover tools I use daily to make searching and organizing more efficient.

Welcome aboard! Its time for the Internet Research Geek to get started! I won’t bore you with talk about me, you can go over to the “About” page for that. This site is dedicated to helping you find what you need when you need it, quickly.

In light of our current gas prices, I’m going to kick things off there. Following are the top sites to help you find cheap gas in your area. Each one of these sites has its own spin.

Before you gas up, make sure you know whether the price on the pump is for credit and cash, or whether it’s for cash only. I’ve noticed an increase in the number of stations that are reeling you in with a great price only to find tiny print stating that the price is for cash only. My kids smell cash so I tend not to carry enough to pay for a full tank of gas.

http://www.gasbuddy.com/

This site is searchable by zip code and lists the lowest regular gas prices in the last 48 hours. Gives the option to get receive the info by computer, cell phone text message or from your phone browser.

http://gasprices.mapquest.com/

Gas prices are plotted on a map near the address you enter. I like this one because it allows me to see the gas prices on the map and I can plan my trips accordingly.

http://www.altfuelprices.com/

For those of you that are a step ahead and using alternative fuel, this one is for you. From electric to hydrogen, you’ll find stations with the lowest prices around the nation.

http://www.motortrend.com/gas_prices/index.html

No fuss, no muss, no bother. A simple site, searchable by zip code.

http://www.petrolprices.com/

For my friends in the UK, another simple site. They are currently undergoing maintenance but will be up shortly.

If you want to search for more sites on your own, you can use this search string in Google: ~cheap gas prices

(The tilde, aka “squiggly mark” tells Google to search for words that mean the same as “cheap. “

If that doesn’t do it, try the search engine “Clusty” at http://clusty.com/ I hate the name but love the results. Clusty groups your search results into categories which make it much easier to find what you’re looking for.

Remember to keep those tires inflated, slow down, don’t use the air conditioning unless you have to, and keep up on your oil changes, these are simple things to improve your gas mileage! What else are you doing to cut down your fuel expenses? Has anyone started to carpool or use mass transit?
