Job Openings

by The Internet Research Geek on July 16, 2008

Looking for a new job or career can be a daunting task In our current economy. Where do you start, what can you do to make it less tedious and maximize your results? The following tips will help you find job openings without having to spend hours scouring individual company sites.

SimplyHired:
Use the Advanced Job Search option for best results and then fill in a specific job title if you want to narrow your results – “Mechanical Engineer” rather then just Engineer. If you are looking within a specific range, enter the location specifics and your commutable range.

Set your Preferences to the largest number of results per page – this will eliminate the need to keep going back and forth to view more openings. At the box in the bottom, enter a name in the box for “save this search as”. This will save you from having to recreate the search each time. To further increase your productivity, sign up for “get email alerts” on your results page. This will email you new results, or you can sign up for an RSS feed.

Indeed: Running neck and neck with Simplyhired, the concept is the same and will overlap to a large extent however there are enough unique openings that it’s worth using both sites. The same tips for Simplyhired apply here too.

Just Posted: A simple little site that lets you enter your job-related keywords and a geographic location. You determine the relevance of the results by setting a percentage. Start at 70% and adjust from there.

Jobster:
Like Simply Hired and Indeed. Same tips apply. Make sure to use the “get job alerts” to automate the process.

Nicheboards:
This site lists various industry specific job boards as the name might imply. Some of the niches include finance, logistics, manufacturing, health and science and diversity boards.

I didn’t list mega Job site Monster because their openings will be shown in your search with the sites listed above. Happy Hunting!

Very good list :) I’ve only really used Monster.com. These kind of sites are definitely better than recruiters. At least tech recruiters… they are blood thirsty.

Have a great day. I will check back!

Thanks Brent! =) Unfortunately, a few bad tech recruiters can taint the reputation of good ones. For those that are currently out of work, I think every avenue needs to be explored including social networking sites, alumni sites, former co-workers etc. It’s tough out there.
